About Me, Your Child's Teacher

I have been teaching for 30 years now in five different states. I have held teaching Certificates in Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi, Wyoming and now, Alabama. We moved to Montgomery in 2000 when my husband (of 44 years), Lee, came here to become Department Head of Accounting and Finance at AUM.

We have 2 sons:
Lee IV lives in Houston, Texas with his wife, Lisa, and their son, Allen Lee and daughter, Laura Katherine.

Matt lives in Pensacola, Florida with his wife, Elvira, and their twins, Caitlin Elizabeth and Ethan Charles.

My "love of teaching is mainly in math and science". In the summer of 2002 I had my first Teacher Enrichment Study in Aerospace at Head School,(Mrs. Susan Mallett, Principle). From there my interest soared into "SPACE". I was blessed to receive the Alabama Aerospace Teacher of the Year in 2004. In 2008 with God as my Pilot and help from the Parents and Staff at TRA I received the Junior Cadet National Teacher of the Year. With this award I was invited to Kennedy Space Center, along with my husband, Lee, to take a military flight to and from Cape Canaveral, Florida from July 9 - 13, 2008 and attend a great Kennedy Space Center Workshop with 70 other teachers. We studied Digital Learning Network, Hubble Space Telescope, toured NASA buildings, launch Pads, Air Force Museum, Astronaut Hall of Fame, and viewed the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttles Orbitors, many booster rockets (including the HUGE Saturn V Booster) with tour guide, ANDREW (Andy) CHAIKIN who was the author of A MAN ON THE MOON and FROM EARTH TO THE MOON. We also got to be with Astronaunt, Tom Jones (author of SKY WALKING)and had him and Andy sign their books for us. I really liked this trip! I was again BLESSED to receive the National ACE Teacher of the year Award in 2009 for teaching Aerospace Connections in Education for the 29 schools through out the USA.

I feel my purpose in life is to teach the Heart of Jesus and help others know how to take care of our Earth and our minds. I plan to teach your children (with your help) to read, understand math concepts, and learn about good CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, PHYSICAL FITNESS and AEROSPACE this year.

God bless you, your children and Taylor Road Academy this new school year of 2009 - 2010,

Mary G. Gurley
